How Far Is Kenya from Tanzania?

Kenya and Tanzania sit side by side, and they are closer than most travelers expect. The route most visitors take is Nairobi to Arusha, approximately 273 kilometres by road through Namanga. Driving takes around 4 to 5 hours without border delays; flights take about an hour.

If you are planning a trip that includes both countries, the distance is the easy part. What matters is how you cross the border, which documents you need, and how much time to allow. This guide covers all three.

Nairobi to Arusha: Your Three Options

Most travelers fly into Nairobi, then head south to Arusha, the starting point for northern Tanzania’s safari parks and Kilimanjaro climbs. The main crossing, Namanga, is about 160 km southeast of Nairobi and 100 km north of Arusha.

By shuttle bus. This is the cheapest and most popular choice. The journey takes around 6 to 6.5 hours, including 30 to 45 minutes at the border. Shuttles usually leave Nairobi at 8:00 AM and again at 2:00 PM, and companies such as Riverside Shuttle and Impala Shuttle run daily services. The crew assists with border formalities.

By private transfer. This is the most comfortable option for families and groups. It follows the same road and takes about 4.5 hours excluding border delays, and you can stop when you like.

By air. Flights from Nairobi to Arusha take about an hour on average. Light aircraft leave from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport several times a day, and you can also fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport. It is the fastest option. Kenya and Tanzania share the same time zone, so you don’t lose an hour.

Which Option Is Best?

  • On a tight budget and happy to travel by day: the shuttle.
  • Travelling as a family or group, or with luggage: a private transfer, because you can stop when you like and skip the shared timetable.
  • Short on time, or arriving late: fly. You save several hours.

If you’re not sure, email us at [email protected] with your arrival time and group size, and we’ll suggest the right option.

The Namanga Border Crossing

Namanga is a one-stop border post, so you complete the exit from Kenya and the entry into Tanzania in the same place. Border checks can take up to an hour during busy periods.

What to expect:

  • You leave Kenya at the Kenyan counter, then enter Tanzania at the Tanzanian one.
  • You can pay for a Tanzanian visa at the border, but applying for the e-visa online first saves a lot of time.
  • Keep some US dollars or small local bills for snacks and incidental fees.

What You Need to Cross from Kenya to Tanzania

This is where travelers get caught out, so check each item before you go.

  • A Tanzania visa. Your Kenyan entry authorisation does not cover Tanzania. Most visitors need a Tanzania visa, and US citizens are commonly required to obtain a multiple-entry visa (often quoted at around US$100). Read our full guide: Tanzania Visa for US Citizens.
  • Kenya entry requirements. Since 2024, Kenya has been moving to an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for many nationalities, replacing visa-on-arrival for some passports. Requirements vary by passport and have been updated over time, so check the latest rules for your nationality before you fly. Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation official page.
  • Travel insurance for Tanzania. In recent years, Tanzania has introduced requirements for inbound travel insurance for many foreign visitors, typically purchased via the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) portal and commonly quoted around US$44. Rules and enforcement have evolved, so confirm the current requirement for your passport and route (air or land) before you travel. • Yellow fever certificate. Kenya is classified as a yellow fever risk country, and border officers commonly ask travelers arriving from Kenya to show a vaccination certificate. Carry it with your passport. See Do You Need Vaccinations for Tanzania?
  • Passport. At least six months of validity and blank pages.

Can You Combine a Kenya and Tanzania Safari?

Yes, and many travelers do. The Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti in Tanzania belong to the same ecosystem, but there is no direct crossing between them. The usual road border is Isebania in Kenya and Sirari in Tanzania, and the transfer commonly takes 8 to 10 hours or more, depending on your lodge and the border formalities. Cross-border use of safari vehicles is restricted in practice, a Kenyan guide takes you to the border and a Tanzanian guide takes over.

A Simple Route: Nairobi, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar

A popular way to link both countries looks like this:

  1.     1. Fly into Nairobi, then take the shuttle or a private transfer to Arusha.

    2. Spend a day in the Kilimanjaro region. See Things to Do in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.

    3. Start your safari or your Kilimanjaro climb.

    4. Finish with a beach stay in Zanzibar.

Tips Before You Cross

  • Leave Nairobi on the morning shuttle, so you reach Arusha in daylight.
  • Carry printed copies of your visa, insurance and yellow fever certificate.
  • Keep your passport in your hand luggage, not in the bus hold.
  • Allow extra time after a long flight, and don’t plan a connection on the same day.
  • Check the entry rules again a week before you travel, because they change.
