Discover Mt. Meru

Climb Mount Meru — Tanzania's Quiet Giant

At 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Africa's fifth-highest peak and the second-highest in Tanzania — yet it sits in the shadow of its famous neighbor, Kilimanjaro, just 70 km away. That's exactly what makes it worth climbing. Fewer crowds, wilder terrain, and a trail that runs straight through Arusha National Park, past buffalo, giraffe, and colobus monkeys, before rising above the clouds to a knife-edge summit ridge with Kilimanjaro floating on the horizon at sunrise.

Meru isn't a technical climb, but it isn't a walk in the park either. Expect steep switchbacks, a crater rim scramble, and a summit push that starts around midnight — a genuine test that also happens to be one of the best altitude-acclimatization treks in East Africa.

And, of course, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding savannahs, beautiful lakes, and Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching the summit, travelers will marvel at the awe-inspiring sight of sunrise over Africa — a truly memorable moment that will stay with you forever.

Why Climb Mount Meru With Jairos Adventure

    • Local, Arusha-based team — our guides and crew live and work at the foot of the mountain, not in a call center overseas
    • Built-in wildlife safari — Arusha National Park's lower slopes are genuinely wild; you'll likely see more animals here than most trekkers see all trip
    • The smartest Kilimanjaro warm-up — climb Meru first and arrive at Kilimanjaro already partly acclimatized, with real trekking legs
    • Small groups, personal attention — max [6] climbers per group, not a crowd
    • Transparent, all-inclusive pricing — no surprise add-ons at the gate

Our honest take: if you only have a handful of days in Tanzania or want a serious trek without the Kilimanjaro price tag, Meru stands completely on its own. If Kilimanjaro is the goal, climbing Meru 2–3 days beforehand meaningfully improves your summit odds.

Meru Trekking Routes We Offer

Momella Route — 3 Days: The classic ascent: Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut → summit push → descent, all in a tight, efficient itinerary. Best for trekkers on a shorter timeline who are already reasonably fit.

Momella Route — 4 Days: Same trail, one extra acclimatization night at Saddle Hut before the summit attempt. We recommend this option for most climbers — the added altitude adjustment noticeably improves comfort and summit success.
