About this Destination

Discover Mti Mkubwa (2,750m)

Mti Mkubwa (2,750m), meaning "Big Tree" in Swahili, is the first overnight camp on the Machame Route up Mount Kilimanjaro, reached after a moderate 5- 7 km hike through lush montane rainforest from the Machame Gate. The camp takes its name from the towering ancient trees that once stood in the area, offering hikers their first taste of camp life on the mountain amid a cool, misty forest environment alive with birdsong, colobus monkeys, and dense vegetation dripping with moss and epiphytes. Arriving typically in the afternoon after 3-5 hours of trekking, climbers set up camp here to acclimatize before continuing the next day into the moorland zone, with the overnight stay providing a crucial first adjustment to increasing altitude as well as a welcome rest amid the rainforest's cool, humid atmosphere.

7-Days Kilimanjaro Climbing - Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route to Kilimanjaro is one of the most scenic trails on the west side of Kilimanjaro and offers a virtual climate expedition. The shallow mountain stream wanders peacefully through the Barranco Valley’s bottom amid the clouds. Frosting shields the valleys, whilst the azure glaciers scatter extravagantly across the ice fields. Immature trees flourish amongst the towering emerald canopies, and the lush vegetation conceals the moist floors. Thick shadows cast down from the bright sun. Faint buffalo trails are carved into the smooth grounds of the Shira Plateau, and milky white mist clings to and enrobes everything it can.
