Located at a lower elevation than Kilimanjaro's gates, Momella Gate offers a completely different trekking experience, with routes winding through montane forest home to giraffes, buffalo, and colobus monkeys before climbing higher toward Meru's dramatic volcanic crater and ash cone. Often used as an acclimatization climb before attempting Kilimanjaro, a trek beginning at Momella Gate combines rich wildlife viewing with a serious high-altitude challenge, making it a rewarding and popular addition to many Tanzania climbing itineraries.
